The method of criterion equations helped to define the heat transfer coefficient. The calorimetric method was used to change the aggregation state, while the pycnometric method was applied to calculate the density. Its thermophysical properties were defined according to the thermocouple inertia method. The research featured a pectin extract from watermelon rind. The present research objective was to find the density and thermophysical characteristics of the pectin extract in order to optimize the drying process. Secondary watermelon raw materials are a promising resource for this type of food coating as it contains 13.4% of pectin components, of which 8.1% is protopectin. Pectin-based protective coatings can produce a perfect biodegradable edible film. The present study analyzed the current progress in the integration of renewable energies into traditional RW for the drying of fruits and vegetables, as well as highlighted the existing knowledge gaps. The integration of these technologies (RW with solar energy) represents a technological improvement for the food industry, especially regarding environmental concerns. Renewable alternatives, such as solar energy, represents a clean and abundant energy source. Hybridization is when two or more heat transfer techniques are used in food dehydration. As a solution to this problem, hybridization of the heating system can be adopted in the drying process. Although RW is more energy-efficient than hot air-based techniques, the equipment traditionally consumes electricity, largely obtained from fossil fuels, emitting polluting gases. The Refractance Window (RW) is a suitable technique for fruits and vegetables as it maintains the nutritional quality of the raw material in the dry product. The hybrid solar dryer operating under vacuum is an innovative and clean technology that results in high-quality products and has excellent potential to be used in small farms.Ībstract Drying is a fundamental process in the food industry, especially for highly perishable foods, such as fruits and vegetables, because they tend to have short durability post-harvest, resulting in economic and environmental losses. The drying of all the fruit and vegetable samples resulted in dried and crisp products in 3-4 hours, depending on the drying temperature, and the use of continuous electric support for temperatures higher than 70 ✬. The dryer was also tested for persimmons and carrots. Banana slices could be dried with the most basic equipment configuration (vacuum chamber, vapor condenser, and vacuum pump), resulting in homogeneous and crispy snacks. Drying chambers with a full capacity of 4 kg of sliced food were operated under vacuum or vacuum pulses (conductive multiflash drying). A solar heater was coupled to a thermally insulated reservoir with electrical resistances to provide hot water at 90 ☌ as the indirect heating medium. In this study, a hybrid-solar vacuum dryer was designed, built, and applied to fruit dehydration. Solar drying is sustainable, but the dryers must be improved to produce high-quality foods in short times. Food drying uses much energy and is considered a high carbon footprint process.

Update your closet staple with sexy cocktail party dresses, trendy little black dresses, and gorgeous party dresses. Today, a cocktail party is more likely to be a come-as-you-are affair, and cocktail dresses are found only at weddings, holiday parties and exclusive fashion and entertainment industry events.Cocktail dresses are the perfect go-to outfit for all your parties this season. For the most part, the days of cocktail etiquette, along with the semi-formal dressing standards, are long gone. Of course, this modern "golden age" has more to do with hip bars, creative bartenders and innovative concoctions than parties and dressing. From Yves Saint Laurent's mid-60's 'Mondrian' dress to the slinky slip dresses worn by cosmo-sipping Carrie Bradshaw in the late 90's, designers never stopped producing so-called "cocktail dresses," whether or not they were intended or used to fit that purpose.Įnter the 2000s, perceived by many to be the renaissance of cocktail culture. By the end of the 1960s, even upper-class women began hosting at-home drinking soirées in palazzo pants and jumpsuits, and the idea of the cocktail dress became more of a style than type of occasion wear. After all, in his 1957 autobiography "Christian Dior and I," the famed French designer stated the cocktail was the "symbol par excellence of the American way of life." įor true cocktail aficionados, the period between the 1970s and 1990s is seen mostly as a low point in the history of drink mixing, and the popularity of hosting semi-formal cocktail affairs slowly disappeared along with the cocktail shakers. This terminology was also a sly marketing technique used to attract booze-loving American customers who enjoyed hosting and dressing for cocktail hours. Dior famously dubbed one of his early evening frocks a "cocktail dress," leading to a rise in the use and concept of cocktail dressing by the end of the 1940s. Women's clothing in the Western world at this time was highly influenced by Christian Dior's "New Look" collection of 1947, which made cinched waists and full skirts the ubiquitous silhouette for formal dressing, along with the form-hugging sheath dresses popularized in films by the likes of Marilyn Monroe. The devastating effects of World War II had an obvious effect on cocktail dressing, but once the war was over, a surge in the popularity of at-home cocktail parties gave the cocktail dress a whole new life. Must Read: Willa Bennett Named Editor in Chief of 'Highsnobiety,' Eileen Fisher Launches Digital Platform to Tackle Textile Waste For years, the main selling point of cocktail ensembles was "practicality." Often times, the only difference between a stylish day ensemble and cocktail outfit was a change in accessories, hence the popularity of the cocktail hat and other coordinating pieces. Because of that, cocktail attire became synonymous with flexibility and functionality, allowing women to look not-too sophisticated during the day and not-too casual in the early evening. According to fashion historian Elyssa Schram Da Cruz, this new type of "Drinking Woman" was seen at "private cocktail soirées and lounges, and the cocktail dress, as a short evening sheath with matching hat, shoes and gloves was designated to accompany her." Like the modern happy hour, the cocktail hour usually took place between 6 and 8 eight p.m., making the cocktail dress a necessary factor in a woman's transition between day and night. Equipped with greater amounts of independence, young women rebelled against the older generations by going to clubs, dancing the Charleston and smoking cigarettes with a cocktail in hand. Although not every woman was bold enough to wear short skirts and bob her hair during the 1920s, the decade is often marked as the era of the flapper. Better yet, it was basically ready for prime time. As luck would have it, engineers were quietly working on this feature. He asked Steam if it would be possible to stream directly to a game page rather than a special sale hub. That live stream was supposed to be a one-off thing - until Lowrie connected the dots. Lowrie had taken advantage of a similar system in May with the big Devolver publisher sale: The studio streamed its games directly to the sale's landing page, allowing folks to see everything in action before buying. This was an in-progress Steam feature, still being tested by a handful of beta players. Update your settings here, then reload the page to see it. This content is not available due to your privacy preferences. They could at any time, if they saw you playing, they could peek in and see what you're playing and watch you play." "I knew that Steam had an internal broadcasting thing for years where you could broadcast your games to your friend group. "It did start to bug me again, I guess, because we just want people to have so much fun with this," he said. The ban didn't bother Lowrie again until a few weeks ago, in the run-up to the game's complete launch - fully narrated story mode and all - on January 18th. We were able to sell it and get it out there to a larger audience."ĭespite the Twitch blackout, Genital Jousting sold well in Early Access as Free Lives continually updated the game and added new modes. And it was a bummer because it did have online play, it would've been fun to do. It's a bummer, for sure, because certainly streaming is a huge part of awareness and promoting a game and people enjoying it with their favorite streamers. "I certainly inquired about it, but they pointed to the rules, and the rules are rules."Ī Twitch representative told Lowrie Genital Jousting had sexual and adult content, and so it got the ax, simple as that. "It's disappointing but also understandable because you have to draw some sort of line, I'm sure," Lowrie said. His immediate reaction? "Oh, that's a bummer." He checked out Twitch's list of prohibited games and spotted Genital Jousting sandwiched between Dramatical Murder and Grezzo 1 & 2. The same couldn't be said for Twitch - people started tweeting Lowrie, asking if he knew the game was banned from Amazon's streaming site. Genital Jousting ended up on Steam Early Access in late 2016 and it was an immediate hit with the YouTube live-streaming community. It's a really fun game." His contact didn't see why not, as long as the proper warnings were posted. Lowrie turned to the Steam representative and asked, "Hey, is there any reason why this couldn't be on Steam? Because everyone's loving it and it'd be great to release. We were having a drink afterward, and we saw this on the screen and everyone's in the crowd laughing and playing this game." "Our guy from Steam, our primary contact from Steam, was hanging out with us just for a meeting. "We were at GDC two years ago and we knew of Genital Jousting, and brought it to our little space at GDC and they were showing it," Lowrie recalled. In January, following a series of fortuitous events after the game's Twitch ban, Genital Jousting became the first title to host a live stream directly on its Steam page, penises and all. Still, the ban itself came out of nowhere, with no active outreach from Twitch, and it threw the studio's live-streaming plans slightly out of whack. Neither was Nigel Lowrie, co-founder of publisher Devolver Digital. In short, Genital Jousting is meant to demystify the penis in an accessible, light-hearted, fully-clothed manner.ĭespite the game's intentions, no one at Free Lives - the studio behind Genital Jousting and Broforce - was particularly surprised to find the game banned on Twitch. Its story mode is fully narrated, starring a penis named John as he grapples with a midlife crisis and reevaluates his priorities. It's not even really about intercourse or how silly penises look when they're flopping around a screen - it's designed to shine a spotlight on toxic masculinity and highlight the perils of a patriarchal society. However, Genital Jousting is not a violent sexual game. It's on the site's list of banned games, alongside titles like Battle Rape, The Maiden Rape Assault: Violent Semen Inferno and Suck My Dick or Die. So, no, you won't find Genital Jousting on Twitch. The penises are often clothed, it should be noted, but the gameplay makes this odd anatomy lesson very clear: One of the main mechanics has players attempt to stick a penis tip into the anus of another penis. You won't find Genital Jousting on Twitch, largely because the game is populated by a variety of brightly colored penises with X-marked anuses between their testicles. During Sleeping Dragons Wake, Claugiyliamatar was possessed by the wraith of the ancient dracolich Chardansearavitriol, also known as Ebondeath, which now loyally serves the worshipers of Myrkul (see “Mere of Dead Men”). The abandoned lair of the green dragon Claugiyliamatar, nicknamed the Old Gnawbone, is found in these woods. This ancient forest tucked behind the Sword Mountains contains the ruins of bygone dwarven civilizations. Recently, efforts have been made to keep the road safe, with light patrols of guards on horseback moving between Neverwinter and Leilon. For years, the stretch of road south of Neverwinter fell into disuse because of frequent monster attacks. This highway hugs the coast, connecting Neverwinter to the coastal cities of Luskan to the north and Waterdeep to the south. These rocky, windswept hills are dotted with old mines that have become infested with monsters. The Triboar Trail runs right through this abandoned town, which was sacked by barbarians years ago and now lies in ruins. Some locations marked on the map are not detailed in this adventure but are indicated for reference only. This information is not secret and can be shared with players if they request details about a location. Geographical locations marked on both the DM’s map and the players’ map are described below in alphabetical order. It can be shared freely with the players as their characters explore the region. A player-friendly version of the map is also included with this adventure (see appendix C). This map is for the DM’s eyes only, as it indicates the locations of places described later in this adventure or the adventures that follow. The DM’s Sword Coast map shows a region of the Forgotten Realms called the Sword Coast. The following abbreviations appear in this book: Symbol If you need to adjust the difficulty of an encounter during combat, you can alter hit point totals without the player characters ever knowing and have enemies retreat or reinforcements arrive as needed. You are empowered to modify the number of enemies in an encounter and their hit point totals as you see fit. This adventure contains advice for adjusting encounters based on the number of characters in the party. For example, a spellcaster makes a good sidekick for a fighter or rogue. Ideally, a sidekick’s abilities should complement those of the main character.Sidekicks are stalwart companions who can perform tasks both in and out of combat, including things such as setting up camp and carrying gear.Make sure the player understands the roles and limitations of sidekicks in this adventure: Magic items are described in the Dungeon Master’s Guide. Spells and equipment mentioned in the adventure are described in the Player’s Handbook. When a creature’s name appears in bold type, that’s a visual cue for you to look up the creature’s stat block in the Monster Manual, unless the adventure’s text instead refers you to the monster appendix in this adventure. All the necessary stat blocks are included there or in appendix A. The Monster Manual contains stat blocks for most of the creatures found in this adventure. The Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide is helpful but not necessary. To run this adventure, you need the D&D fifth edition core rulebooks: Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual. If you like and use these unauthorized PDF versions of the adventures, please consider paying your dues to D&D Beyond. This adventure and the two before it in the Beyond the Dragon of Icespire Peak series are available from the D&D Beyond website for a small fee. This adventure trilogy can be played as a sequel to Dragon of Icespire Peak, the adventure that comes with the D&D Essentials Kit. You can run Divine Contention as a stand-alone adventure or as the concluding part in a trilogy called Beyond the Dragon of Icespire Peak (of which Storm Lord’s Wrath is the first adventure and Sleeping Dragon’s Wake is the second). You can run the adventure for as few as one player or as many as six players. By the end of the adventure the characters should reach 13th level. D ivine Contention is a Dungeons & Dragons adventure designed for characters of 11th through 12th level set in the Sword Coast region of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. In April, Bruce recorded the his first attempt at “Backstreets.” to return to their native Israel, never to return. Regardless of whatever might have been happening behind closed doors, though, on stage the heat and chemistry between Bruce and Suki was palpable to those who recall seeing them perform together.īut by March 1975, something seemed to have come to a head, and the Lahavs abruptly left the U.S. Trying to learn how to walk and talk rough just like the heroes we thought we had to be In particular, it contained some lines destined for another classic altogether: It was clearly a post-breakup song, and Bruce’s lyrics were spiteful and vituperative. That early version of “She’s the One” was a very different song than the one Bruce would release on Born to Run within the year. But if “She’s the One” was truly inspired by her, things had already gone very wrong by then. Some have claimed that Suki was the inspiration for “She’s the One,” and certainly the timing of her arc with the band would cooperate with that thesis. Suki made her E Street Band stage debut at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City on October 4, 1974–the same night Bruce premiered a work-in-progress “ She’s the One.” I didn’t think I was very good… You have to practice for hours a day. “Louis sent me along to audition,” Suki told The Jerusalem Post in 2007. What we do know is that Lahav made her first appearance on the Springsteen scene in 1973, when a children’s choir no-showed for Bruce’s recording sessions and Suki was drafted to be a one-woman choir for “ 4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)” and “ Incident on 57th Street.” (Suki’s husband Louis recorded overdub after overdub to get his wife to sound like a choir.)īy 1974, Bruce had begun writing in a more romantic vein, and over the summer he decided to add a warm violin to the band’s sound to heighten his more tender songs. And still others simply decline to comment. Others demur, pointing to Lahav’s marriage and Bruce’s committed relationship that spanned Lahav’s brief tenure with the E Street Band as evidence that nothing untoward was going on. Some claim to know, like Bruce’s former agent Mike Appel, who minced few words about it in his 1992 sensational book with author Marc Eliot. We may never know the true story of the friendship between Bruce Springsteen and Suki Lahav. She then had to get out to try and save the marriage.” - Mike Appel, Down Thunder Road: The Making of Bruce Springsteen (1992) I believe he got crazy because, quite simply, Bruce fell in love with Suki and she with him. Louis was our engineer and had done terrific work on the albums, as well as running sound on the live shows. She and her husband, Louis, decided to go back to Israel. UMass Lowell’s falcons usually stay in the area year-round. In eastern North America, the outbound and return routes of some individuals follow an elliptical path in which individuals travel south along the East Coast and return north along the Gulf Coast. Individuals typically follow the same route year after year. The Peregrine Falcon is one of 26 North American species considered to be a partial migrant. The falcon closes its feet, and uses them to knock the prey out of the sky. When it finds its target, the falcon folds its wings and falls into a nose dive, or stoop, gaining speeds over 200 mph. To pull this off, a Peregrine Falcon flies high into the sky, using its keen eyesight to locate birds flying below. Perhaps its most famous hunting technique is the dive. They typically catch their prey in the air with fast pursuits, rapid dives and other impressive aerial maneuvers for which these falcons are known and admired. They also occasionally hunt mammals, reptiles and insects, and there have even been reports of some Peregrine Falcons specializing in eating bats. Peregrine Falcons are mainly bird hunters starlings, pigeons, blackbirds, jays, shorebirds, and waterfowl are all fair game for a hungry Peregrine Falcon. The pair atop Fox Hall nest in a box with gravel floor built by UMass Lowell staff under the guidance of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. They lay their eggs in scrapes, or small depressions, that they make in the soil or gravel of a cliff ledge. Like most falcons, Peregrine Falcons do not build their own nests. Once established, the adults will remain in the same territory year-round. They also manage quite well in urban settings-such as the pair who nest on the roof of Fox Hall. Peregrine Falcons live and breed on every continent in the world except Antarctica. They are found in deserts, seashores, wetlands, tundra, grasslands, dry forests and craggy mountains. Peregrine falcons are skilled at catching a variety of prey from small songbirds to large ducks, which allows them to live in almost any type of climate and habitat. Females and males are identical in appearance however, the female can be one-third larger than the male. Immature peregrines are buff colored in front and have dark brown backs. An adult peregrine has a dark grey back and crown, dark bars or streaks on a pale chest and abdomen, and heavy malar (cheek) stripes on the side of the face. It can weigh between 1 and 3.5 pounds and measure between 13 and 20 inches long. The peregrine falcon is a crow-sized bird, weighing just over two pounds with a wing span of approximately 3 feet. Peregrine falcons are birds of few words they are generally silent but sometimes make a rasping kack-kack-kack-kack sound in the nest. The peregrine falcon belongs to the genus Falco, which is characterized by long pointed wings. It mates for life-about ten years-and is fiercely protective of its young. It’s the fastest animal on the plant, capable of speeds of up to 200 miles per hour. We’ll cover maintenance rehearsing in a future blog post, so disregard it for now. This brute force technique of memorization by repeating information over and over is called maintenance rehearsing. You’d have to memorize each sound individually, in sequence, and then recite it correctly. If you’re not already familiar with the Welsh language, it’s probably going to take you a considerable amount of time to memorize that phrase. Try to memorize the following Welsh phrase: “Mae'r haul yn uchel yn yr awyr am hanner dydd.” When I say meaningful, I mean information that makes sense to the student rather than randomness. Any information can be encoded, although information that is more meaningful to the student can be encoded faster and recalled more easily from long-term memory. This “filing” of information into long-term memory is called encoding. When new information is learned, it enters short-term memory where it’s held for a relatively short period of time and is either forgotten or filed away into long-term memory. Information processing theory focuses on explaining how information transfers from short-term memory (working memory) to long-term memory. So to start, let’s look through the cognitivism lens, specifically at information processing theory, and more specifically the tenet of elaborative rehearsal. When designing a learning environment or course, you’re not stuck to using one type of theory, you can pull ideas from all of them if you like. They’re just guidelines for instructional design. But that’s okay, we don’t use learning theories as hard rules. They’re not set in stone, and honestly a lot of the scientific research they were originally built on may no longer be considered as rigorous as we once thought. Learning theories are nothing more than ideas. Is that good or bad? You decide.ĭifferent learning theories have different viewpoints on how to tackle learning situations. Blue light fades away, and everything else is tinted orange. If you wear amber-tinted glasses, your perception of the world changes. Learning theories are nothing more than a lens to view the world through. From their work (and the work of many other psychologists) learning theories were created and refined. These psychologists are often attributed to a particular division of learning psychology which they studied like behavioristic, humanistic, and cognitive psychology. If you’ve ever taken a psychology class, you’ve probably heard of famous psychologists such as Skinner, Maslow, Piaget, and so on. So, what is elaborative rehearsal, and how does it work?
